Description: THE FAQ: What is the EPIC Surf League? The EPIC Surf League’s mission is to develop young surfers in individual and team competition through positive coaching in a fun and safe, Christian environment. The League aims to help young surfers excel in the sport by practicing surf specific conditioning and technique training. Surfers will learn everything from contest strategy to advanced maneuvers and from surfboard design to ocean safety. We emphasize good sportsmanship, teamwork, values, and fellowship with others, in addition to teaching high performance surfing. The EPIC Surf League offers local youth a chance to be a part of the awesome sport of surfing while learning life skills such as responsibility and teamwork. Our focus is to foster a team environment that promotes the improvement of body, mind, and spirit! How is the league run and what are the requirements? The league concept is like any other sports league (basketball, baseball, football, etc.), but for SURFING! Another way to say it...it's a Surf Contest every week! Surfers will compete individually within the League by Age Groups, Gender, & Overall. Plus, compete in 'The Game' format (ie: X-Games...see www.nationalsurfleague.com ) between Teams in the League, AND with the other Surf Leagues in the area. Currently, there is only one active league of this kind, the Ponte Vedra Surf League, but others are being organized to begin this fall! The ESL will host Boys and Girls, ages 7-18 yrs. old. The only requirements are that you have your own surfboard and bring a positive attitude and open mind to every event! Surfers will meet with coaches and other league surfers (team practices & competitions) on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:30- 6:30 P.M. and at least once a month on a Saturday for a league contest. Since this is team oriented league, attendance at these functions is very important- We recognize that some of you may play other sports and we will work hard to make schedule adjustments for those who do. Surf League practices will consist of technique training, surf-related conditioning, and mock heats. Flat & unfavorable surf days may include dry-land techniques practice, team skills, and video analysis. We will be filming portions of practices about twice a month, allowing the students to review the film with one of the coaches or technical advisors. The groups will be split up into Elementary/Junior High and High School/College divisions. Sample practice schedule: 4:30 - Warm-up 4:45 - Team Skills / Individual Technique Skills 5:00 - Drills / Conditioning 5:45 - Mock Heats 6:20 - Devotional & Stretch How much does it cost to be a League Surfer and when is the season? Participants with the EPIC Surf League pay the affordable rate of $150 a month or $450 a season! There are two seasons for the league members to participate in and we encourage students to commit to the whole season. The seasons are broken up into two seasons. The fall season runs August 19 – November 13, 2008 (plus the EPIC Fall Classic Contest!) and the spring season from March 3 to May 28, 2009 (plus the EPIC Surf Jam Contest) Why a Surf League? The goal of this league is to offer those youth who really enjoy surfing, an outlet where they can stay in shape, learn to compete, and have a sport that they call their own!!
